EDDM Retail vs. EDDM BMEU: what's the difference?
The USPS Every Door Direct Mail program operates on two distinct tiers: EDDM Retail for local brick-and-mortar businesses, and EDDM BMEU for commercial volume mailers. Knowing the operational differences prevents costly drop-off delays.
EDDM Retail: Built for Local Small Business
EDDM Retail is engineered for simplicity and local convenience:
- Daily Volume Limit: Up to 5,000 pieces per business per ZIP code per day.
- No Postal Permit Required: You do not need to buy an annual USPS bulk mail permit (saving ~$300/year).
- Drop-Off Location: You drop the bundled mail directly at the local post office that services the specific ZIP code you are mailing.
- Payment: Pay directly online via credit card or at the retail counter when dropping off bundles.
This is the ideal option for independent restaurants, local dentists, lawn care pros, and neighborhood retailers doing targeted drops of 1,000 to 4,000 cards.
EDDM BMEU: For High-Volume Commercial Campaigns
When mailing more than 5,000 pieces in a day or targeting multiple ZIP codes across a metropolitan region, campaigns must enter through a Business Mail Entry Unit (BMEU):
- No Volume Cap: Mail 10,000, 50,000, or 250,000 postcards in a single drop.
- Postal Permit Required: Requires a USPS commercial permit imprint and an active PostalOne! account.
- Single Regional Drop: All mail is dropped at one central regional postal processing facility rather than driving to individual local post offices.
Bundling Rules and Facing Slips
Both Retail and BMEU programs enforce strict packaging standards:
- Mail must be bundled in stacks of exactly 50 to 100 postcards.
- Each bundle must be secured with durable paper straps or rubber bands.
- Every bundle must have a printed USPS Facing Slip on top showing the exact carrier route number, piece count, and entry post office.
When you order full-service EDDM printing, your commercial trade printer automatically handles electronic route sorting, strap bundling, and facing slip attachments so your mail is 100% postal-ready upon delivery.
Target every home and business on a carrier route for as low as $0.216/piece in USPS postage. Interactive route mapping, trade printing, and full-service bundling.
