Commercial paper stocks: 100lb gloss book vs 14pt vs 16pt cardstock
Most buyers choose paper by whatever number looks familiar on a screen. On a commercial press, weight, caliper, and coating dictate whether a brochure folds cleanly, a postcard survives the postal stream, or a business card commands respect in a client's hands.
Points vs. Pounds: The Two Measurement Systems
Paper specifications cause endless confusion because the printing industry relies on two fundamentally different metrics that do not scale together directly:
- Points (pt) measure physical caliper (thickness): One point equals 1/1,000th of an inch (0.001"). A 16pt card is exactly 0.016 inches thick. Caliper determines stiffness, rigidity, and the immediate tactile feedback when someone holds your card or rack card.
- Pounds (lb) measure basis weight: This is the weight in pounds of 500 uncut sheets (one ream) of paper at its traditional parent sheet size. Because "book" paper and "cover" paper have different parent sheet sizes, a 100lb cover stock is almost twice as thick and rigid as a 100lb text (book) stock, despite both carrying the number "100lb".
When comparing print options, never compare a pound number to a point number without knowing whether the pound rating refers to Text/Book or Cover.
100lb Gloss Book vs. 100lb Gloss Cover
This is the single most common specification misunderstanding in commercial printing:
- 100lb Gloss Book (Text): Approximately 4.5 to 5.2 mils (0.005") thick. This is a supple, smooth, lightweight sheet designed for folding. It is the premier standard for multi-page brochures, sales flyers, product catalog inserts, and newsletters. It folds crisp without scoring and keeps mailing weights low.
- 100lb Gloss Cover: Approximately 9.5 to 10 mils (0.010") thick. This is a semi-rigid cardstock. It feels substantial and sturdy in hand. It requires machine scoring before folding to prevent fiber cracking. It is ideal for pocket presentation folders, booklet covers, upscale restaurant menus, and tabletop tent cards.
If you order brochures on 100lb Cover instead of 100lb Book, your piece will feel like heavy cardstock rather than a flexible brochure. For high-end sales leave-behinds, that may be desired; for direct-mail drops where postage is calculated by ounce, 100lb Book is often the economical champion.
14pt vs. 16pt Cardstock: The Handshake Standard
For business cards, door hangers, and direct mail postcards, 14pt and 16pt cardstocks represent the professional commercial baseline:
- 14pt Cardstock: The reliable, cost-efficient workhorse. It holds crisp edges, accepts high-gloss UV or satin matte coatings with high color fidelity, and meets USPS rigidity standards for direct mail automation. Ideal for high-volume promotions, event handouts, and box inserts.
- 16pt Cardstock: Roughly 15% heavier and markedly stiffer. When handed across a conference table or hung on a front doorknob, 16pt cardstock resists bending and corner curling. For luxury business cards, presentation folders, and premium door hangers, the negligible difference in unit price is rewarded with immediate perceived value.
Paper Performance in Florida Humidity
Paper is hygroscopic—it absorbs and releases moisture depending on ambient atmospheric conditions. In Tampa Bay and coastal Florida environments, high humidity causes unprotected uncoated paper to soften and curl over time.
To ensure long-lasting rigidity in Florida climate conditions:
- Opt for 16pt cardstock for door hangers and outdoor materials; lighter 10pt-12pt stocks droop when exposed to morning condensation or afternoon showers.
- Apply Full UV High-Gloss coating to seal the ink layer and paper fibers against moisture penetration.
- For brochures distributed near coastal marinas or outdoor welcome racks, 100lb Gloss Book with an aqueous seal provides an effective moisture shield without stiffening the folds.
Quick Reference Stock Selection Guide
Here is how commercial print buyers select stocks by application:
- Tri-fold & Half-fold Brochures: 100lb Gloss Book (standard) or 100lb Gloss Cover (luxury scored).
- Business Cards: 16pt Cardstock with UV Gloss, Soft-Touch Velvet, or Linen texture.
- Door Hangers: 16pt Heavyweight Cardstock with UV Gloss on front and back.
- EDDM & Postcards: 14pt or 16pt Cardstock with UV Gloss Front for maximum mailbox visibility.
- Presentation Folders: 14pt or 16pt Cardstock with die-cut business card slits.
